The mission was over. Natalia had gotten what she needed and was done. It felt good to be working on her own once more. SHIELD was nice and all, but they really restricted what she was allowed to do. While some organizations were a pain because they told her exactly what to do, SHIELD was a pain because they told her exactly what not to do. And there was very little freedom. They had an ethics code. Her other handlers had too, but it was more loose and circumstantially based. SHIELD had hard lines, and to Natalia, the world had no real hard lines.
This time, Natasha was on her own. Freelancing was where she felt best, and finishing her first mission on her own in years was amazing. The only problem was Yelena. She had gotten in the way, and in order to finish what she needed to do, Natalia needed Yelena's face. General Stalyenko knew the redhead's face. It was unlikely that she'd be able to complete her mission if she didn't do otherwise. For someone who had received the same training as Nat, Yelena was easily enough duped. Perhaps it was for the exact reason that they were so similar that she trusted Natalia so much. All of that would change as soon as Yelena woke up.
Natalia sat in the same makeshift hospital room that Yelena slept in. Her bullet wound in her shoulder was being tended to by Matt. He had come to help just in case she needed backup. Once the General realized who she really was, he had shot her. The Black Widow fought and got what she wanted on her own, but now Matt was going to help. The irony of having a blind man do her stitches was not lost on the now blonde, but she continued to sit in silence, waiting for Yelena to wake up.
