A blue nuka beaker and ink dip pen. I had glazed a small number of pots with this when I was firing last, but for the most part they didn’t fire well, apart from a select handful. The blue tones only begin to show properly once cone ten is really melting so those placed closest to the burners looked great, whereas those scattered elsewhere throughout the kiln pack remained a rather dull, matte white.
One single beaker and mug fired nicely, there was a lovely inkwell too but I mindlessly packed it touching a smaller bowl meaning they welded together as they fired. Mistakes like that are rare, but it’ll inevitably happen when you’re packing dozens of kiln loads of work each year. Although it’s harder with the soda kiln, each pot is more carefully wadded and placed in position, with care taken to ensure it sits stably on their tripod of waddings. There are a number of ink dip pens that fired wonderfully too, so now I just need to fire their respective extruded rests and they’ll be ready, finally. I’ve also glazed a few more mugs and taller beakers with the blue, at least this time round I’ll know where they have to be placed to get the best out of them—directly next to the burners as to get the necessary dose of heat.
These golden nibs are among my favourite, I’ve been collecting vintage pen nibs for the past few months now and have a large bowl brimming with them. It certainly looks like I wont need any new ones for a while now, but these ones are already in short supply as I’ve decked out many of my newly thrown and fired pens with them. I’ve glazed all my work over the past week, so the next will be spent painstakingly cleaning it all up before finally getting back into the rhythm of firing.

Real time, real mistake. // I decided to do a quick video of what I'm working on right now, in real time, and you can see that I made a mistake, took some knots out and kept going. It's one of the best things about macrame, the knot mistakes can just be undone. If only life was that easy. 🙃 // For anyone that's wondering, you can find the rope that I use at knotandrope.com/elsie

The sun today was too good to pass up (winter sunshine is one of the best things around). So I made a temporary studio in the sun doing some watercolour experiments for an artwork in the making
